No problem - LECHUZA planters with an overflow system and drain plug can also be used indoors. Keep the red drain plug firmly in place when using indoors. With the column planters, two red drain plugs must remain in place (one in the liner and one in the bottom of the planter). Use a coin to tighten the drain plug firmly. The drain plug's reliable sealing ring prevents water from leaking from the reservoir.

Frost resistance: LECHUZA can handle the elements, whether snow, ice or frost. But remember - your plants should also be frost resistant!

UV resistance: High quality paint with ceramic and metallic look will retain its appearance for years.

The sturdy plastic does not break, even if the planter takes a fall. When used outdoors, we recommend that the tall column planters be further weighted down (with large pebbles and rocks, for example) to give it more stability. Place pebbles or rocks in the planter after fitting the support tubes, but before putting the liner in place.

LECHUZA planters should be cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild household detergent. The high-quality coating of the planters is similar to automotive paint, so abrasive cleaning products or utensils should not be used on the planter's surface.

LECHUZA planters are made of polypropylene (PP). The premium planters are coated with high-quality ceramic and metallic effect finishes. The MINI- and MAXI-CUBI and the DELTA 15, as well as the CARARO and the DELTA frame, are made from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS).

No, because the LECHUZA sub-irrigation system is designed for the irrigation of all plants which grow in soil. You therefore don't need expensive plants propagated especially for hydroculture, but can choose your favorites from the wide range of conventional plants available. Simply plant them as described in the instructions included in the sub-irrigation set using good-quality potting soil, or alternatively in LECHUZA PON plant substrate.

The LECHUZA sub-irrigation set and the accompanying water level indicator are not suitable for use with hydroculture.

Assembly of the LECHUZA sub-irrigation system is described in detail in the planting instructions. These come with all planters and can also be downloaded from the Download page.

To use the sub-irrigation set in a column planter, you will need the corresponding liner. The sub-irrigation set cannot be fitted directly into a column planter.

The individual components of the LECHUZA sub-irrigation set (separator, water supply shaft, supply shaft cap, water level indicator and LECHUZA PON granulate drainage) can be purchased separately.

The water level indicator is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP). The transparent scale indicator is not made of glass, it is manufactured from polycarbonate (PC).

LECHUZA PON plant substrate is made up of pumice, zeolites, lava and fertilizer. The following fertilizer declaration is applicable to the fertilizer: 1 liter LECHUZA PON contains 3g slow-release fertilizer 15-9-9+3. NPK fertilizer, coated, contains magnesium and trace nutrients effective for 6-12 months. At the end of this period fertilize the plants as usual using commercial liquid fertilizer in the water.

The mineral-based LECHUZA PON with optimum planting properties is the ideal alternative to conventional potting soil - particularly in combination with the LECHUZA sub-irrigation set.

In addition, when you plant your plants in soil, LECHUZA PON forms a drainage layer between the water reservoir of the LECHUZA sub-irrigation set and the soil layer. The amount of LECHZUA PON required for the drainage layer is included in each all-in-one planter.

Repotting your plants in LECHUZA PON plant substrate is really simple: remove your plant from the soil, loosen the rootball carefully and free it from large clumps of soil. After fitting the sub-irrigation set into your LECHUZA planter, place a finger's width of LECHUZA PON to act as drainage. Then, add your plant and fill the planter with LECHUZA PON. Lightly shake and pack down the plant substrate, adding more LECHUZA PON, if necessary.

In general, it is possible to reuse LECHUZA PON when potting new plants. If you originally potted your plant entirely in LECHUZA PON, you can remove it from the plant roots by shaking them a little bit or brushing off the root ball. Some roots may be left in the PON, but this will not affect your new plants as long as their predecessors were not infested by pests. If you planted with both LECHUZA PON and potting soil, regaining the substrate from the plants may be a bit more difficult. In these cases, we recommend using a new layer of LECHUZA PON.

Sufficient LECHUZA PON is already included in the LECHUZA sub-irrigation set to allow for a drainage layer between the water reservoir and the soil layer in your planter. Additional LECHUZA PON is only needed when you repot your plants and change the soil. When repotting, place a fresh finger's width of LECHUZA PON on the separator of the sub-irrigation set. Then, insert the plant and add soil, as usual. Alternatively, you can also plant your plants entirely in LECHUZA PON. A 6 liter pack of LECHUZA PON is available from LECHUZA for this purpose.

Even when you have potted your plant using only the mostly-sterile plant substrate LECHUZA PON, your plants are still susceptible to insects. Warm inside air can make indoor plants particularly prone to pests of all kinds. Therefore, we recommend a few different preventative actions for both indoor plants and outdoor plants that have been moved indoors during the winter. If your plants are close together, make sure to treat all of them. Hereafter, find a few tips for how to handle different types of insect infestations. If you're not sure which pest is disturbing your plants, take a leaf from the plant in question and ask a trusted gardener.

Black Flies and Scale Insects

If your plants are infested with these insects, remove the plant liner from the LECHUZA planter and rinse the plants off under running water. Make sure to remove all infested parts of the plant. Then, treat your plant with protective sprays, rods, or pellets. Spray directly onto the plant or put the rod into the root ball. Before sprinkling pellets onto the PON, water dry root balls, if necessary. Read all instructions before using any protective plant remedies for the first time. Please bear in mind that you cannot eat the produce from plants that have been treated with protective remedies for some time after treatment.

Dark-Winged Fungus Gnats and Other Bad Flies

Dark-winged fungus gnats and white flies tend to leave their eggs in wet potting soil and even in LECHUZA PON, especially when it is too wet. Flypaper helps defend against flying dark-winged fungus gnats. Pouring agents help protect plants from root-damaging larvaes. Simply add the liquid plant protection to the water when filling the LECHUZA planter's reservoir through the water supply shaft.

Spider Mites

Spider mites like to leave their finely-spun threads on indoor plants. If you notice this problem, remove the plant liner from the LECHUZA planter and thoroughly rinse the plant under water. Special anti-spider mite sprays and pouring agents are a great help as well.

During the first 3 months after you have planted your plant in a LECHUZA planter with its sub-irrigation set, you should water the plant from above onto the soil, as you would with a standard planter. After about three months, the roots of your plant have had a chance to grow far enough into the moist area that they can look after themselves independently with water from the reservoir. You can then water your plants conveniently via the water supply shaft.

After the growing-in phase fill the water reservoir to "max." for the first time, using the water supply shaft. LECHUZA now provides optimum care for your plants. No further watering is necessary for the time being! If after a few days or weeks the water level indicator reads "min." - don't water straight away. This is the start of the "dry phase" for the plant - the length of the dry phase is about 1 week for planters in sizes 21 to 43, and about 2 weeks for planters in sizes 50 to 70. After each dry phase, refill the water reservoir to "max." using the water supply shaft.

Please note, however, that each type of plant has its own specific requirements and the dry phase can vary. For questions about specific plants, please visit your local garden center.

To fertilize plants growing in LECHUZA, add commercial liquid fertilizer to the water every second watering, following the instructions on the fertilizer package. The fertilizer is better distributed when the plant soil is occasionally moistened from above with plain water.

When growing in LECHUZA planters, it's easy to move a grown plant into a bigger planter. Just remove the plant from the planter by firmly grabbing the stem. If the roots have grown through the bottom of the liner, remove the plant with one strong pull. Get help from a second pair of strong hands, if needed. You can also trim the root ends that have grown through the liner. Doing so can also help rejuvenate your plant as it stimulates new root growth. If your plant has already been "living" in its planter for a few years, the roots may have completely overgrown the separator. If this is the case, you can remove the entire root ball including the separator and repot everything into a LECHUZA planter that is a few sizes bigger. As you may know, snails are particularly drawn to lettuce and other soft-petaled plants. For this reason, you should avoid potting such plants in planters located on the floors of patios and balconies. Some alternative plants that are more resistent to snails include oregano, thyme, chamomile, rosemary, chives, garlic, sage, and marjoram.
